Richards Rockets To Macon Speedway Feature

Richards Rockets to Macon Speedway Feature

(Macon, IL) Starting ninth in a 25-car field racing 100 green flag laps, Josh Richards came away with the richest single-race win in Macon Speedway history. In the fourth installment of the special St. Louis U-Pic-A-Part 100 as part of the Lucas Oil Late Model Series, Richards grabbed a $12,000 paycheck and carried his points lead further through the summer. It wasn't without plenty of challenge from a familiar Macon Speedway face. Shannon Babb took the lead away from Scott Bloomquist on lap 33 after Bloomquist snagged in the second turn of a restart on the 32nd lap. Babb flew away with the lead and looked like a solid candidate win the event. Lapped traffic caused mischief coming out of the fourth turn with 40 laps left and that opened the door for Richards. Babb stayed right on the bumper of Richards for the final 40 laps but could not pick up any top side momentum to pass for the lead.

Bobby Pierce won the very first as well as the third St. Louis U-Pic-A-Part 100 but failed to finish in the first heat. He started 19th of the 25 cars and by the time the race was ending, Pierce had pulled into third place. Unfortunately as the race drew to a close, Pierce lost control and spun out in the fourth turn coming to the white flag. He would have to start at the tail after the eighth and final caution of the 100-lap race. He would finish 12th.

Bloomquist, who led laps 1-32, pulled off the track and back to his trailer during a caution on the 37th lap. He would come back and start at the back and finish tenth.

The Billingsley Elite Wash Modified feature was as hotly contested with it being anybody's race to win. Curt Rhodes and his son Zach Rhodes started on the front row after both scored heat race wins. Zach Rhodes got caught in a corner and lost the early momentum. He would finish sixth. Rodney Standerfer, Austin Lynn and Mike Harrison all tried to catch Curt Rhodes but it wasn't going to happen. Through lapped traffic and clear straightaways, Rhodes led all 20 laps in a caution-less race.

Tim Hancock once again dominated the B-Modified feature event as he took the 15-lap race in another caution-free event. The win was his third out of the last four B-Modified feature races.

Shannon Babb set fast time for Super Late Model qualifying with a lap of 10.367. The track record is 10.228 set by Billy Moyer in 2015. Babb was the first qualifier out the chute. There were eight cautions in the 100 laps. The longest stretch of time without a caution was 31 laps from lap 68-99. The race lasted 51 minutes and had three different leaders.

Macon Speedway is back in action on Saturday night with the lone visit on the schedule from the Neal Tire MOWA Sprint Car Series Presented by Casey's General Stores. The night will be full of open wheel racing with the POWRi Division 2 Midgets and the Beach House Micro Sprints. The Pro Late Models are on the program, as well, with a Big Ten Series race. The Hornets complete a five division evening to finish off the month of July.
