Thesenvitz Faces Hard Luck In POWRi Debut

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. – 2014 has been a year of ups and downs for Jasper, MN racer Trey Thesenvitz, and the past weekend was no different. Mid-week, his team decided to make their debut with the Illinois-based POWRi 600cc Outlaw Micro Series, rather than the off-weekend they had previously planned.

The racing action began at Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, IL on Friday night, where Thesenvitz’s family-owned #53 Sawyer/Yamaha was ready to do battle with 20 other entries. His pill draw placed him starting the first heat race from outside row four. A ragged start and a heavy track meant not much passing past the first lap, and Thesenvitz would be held to a tenth-place finish.

For the feature, Thesenvitz would start 19th, but a first lap incident in front of him forced an evasive move to avoid a spun car, but an infield tire left nowhere to go. Hard contact with the tire bent the tie rod. Thesenvitz took the car to the trailer, and was scored in the 17th position.

Repairs were made to the car Saturday morning for POWRi’s Dana Godfrey Memorial at Macon Speedway in Macon, IL, where 32 micro sprint entries signed in. Thesenvitz was slated to start on the outside of the front row in the fourth heat race, but before racing could begin, Mother Nature continued her battle with POWRi at Macon, raining out for the third time in three tries in 2014.

Thesenvitz’s team would head north for the third and final leg of their weekend, visiting the Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI for the track’s annual “Cornfest” featuring a triple-sanctioned midget race by POWRi, USAC, and BMARA, with Badger Micros as the undercard. Drawing a 25 pill out of 30 put Thesenvitz outside row four starting spot in heat one. He would work his way up to fourth in the ten-lap heat race, putting him second in passing points. After the invert, Thesenvitz found himself on the pole for the 15–lap main event.

In the feature, Thesenvitz would jump from his pole position out to the lead. However, he would quickly fall to the third position, where he ran for most of the race. Down the back stretch on the final lap, the engine expired, pulling the podium finish from his hands, and miring him to being scored tenth. The car caught fire, but the safety crew quickly extinguished the flames.

Though the team faced bad luck all weekend, they gained their first experience with the very tough crowd that is POWRi micro racing, and look forward to running up front with the series in the near future.

In light of the rough weekend, Thesenvitz would like to thank MerchLane, Performance One, and Speedshack Performance, as well as his family, his crew chief Scuba Steve, and all of his great fans for their continued support. He would also like to thank the POWRi series for being welcoming to him upon his series debut, as well as the fire crew at Angell Park Speedway for putting out his engine fire quickly and keeping him out of harm’s way.

Thesenvitz next plans to compete on August 23 at Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex in Sweet Springs, MO for the “Redd Davidson Classic” in the SWR #93 600cc Outlaw entry.
