Macon Speedway ready to throw the green flag with Lucas Oil Late Models Thursday

MACON, Ill. – The sun shined on Macon Speedway Wednesday afternoon. It’s an omen for good things to come over the next 24 hours.

With campers already parking before the sun set and the finishing touches applied to the legendary track, everything looks good for the St. Louis U-Pic-A-Part 100 Thursday and the first ever appearance here by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Macon Speedway will be ready to race.

While promoter Bob Sargent was preparing the track and Macon Speedway personnel hanging billboards, raising banners, cleaning the bleachers and setting up the beer garden, race day excitement was just around the corner. The 100-lap main event carries with it the richest purse in Macon Speedway history. It pays $12,000 to win and $1,000 to start.

The buzz isn’t limited to just Decatur and Central Illinois. The Internet is lighting up about the Lucas Oil late models racing here on the famed fifth-mile high banked oval. According to racing buff Patrick Davis, there are a combined 316 UMP Summer National Hell Tour feature wins represented by the drivers expcted to attend. Add that to the 10 combined dirt track world championships and 10 dirt late model Dream wins.

You want names? Bloomquist, Moyer, Babb, Owens. Just name the heavyweights. NASCAR stars and Macon Speedway co-owners Ken Schrader and Keny Wallace will race in UMP Billingsley Towing Modifieds. A midway of souvenir trailers will be set up outside the track, just north of the main ticket office. The ground floor pavilion has been converted into a beer garden. The back stretch concession stand has new tables. New flags and pennants are giving the track a new look.

Macon Speedway is ready to go racing. You better get here and get a seat.
