Drivers, fans enjoy busy day during Macon Speedway Test N Tune practice session

MACON, Ill. – The green flag will fly on Macon Speedway racing season Saturday (April 5), and it’s going to be a great season if the Test N Tune practice session Sunday was any indication.

Roughly 60 cars spread over all classes at Macon Speedway hit the fifth-mile banked oval for some practice on a gorgeous spring afternoon. The track was fast, and the drivers were showing off new paint jobs and sponsors. Plenty of fans took advantage to grab a seat and one of those famous Macon Speedway hot dogs for a race-day style picnic. There was plenty of dirt tracking on the historic Macon Speedway track. The drivers are itching now to return for the season opener.

Macon Speedway puts the pedal to the metal for an impressive doubleheader of action for opening night Saturday. The seventh annual Spring Fling features the battle for dirt car bragging rights with the UMP Champions Night by bringing modified, street stock and hornet champions from other area tracks for a battle royal. Meanwhile, open-wheel fans also get the first local appearance by the wildly popular POWRi midgets and mini-sprints on the banked fifth-mile clay oval as Macon Speedway opens for the 69th season. Pits open at 4 p.m., gates open at 5 and racing starts at 7.

Macon Speedway is one of the Midwest’s most famous dirt racing facilities. Co-owned by Bob Sargent and NASCAR stars Tony Stewart, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace, the track is a fan favorite for the layout that creates plenty of wheel-to-wheel action. Macon Speedway hosts racing every Saturday night, plus many weeknight specials.

Macon Speedway is located nine miles south of Decatur on U.S. 51, then 0.6 miles west on Andrews Street, then south to 205 Wiles.
