Shriners Shine for Kids at Macon Speedway

By Brett Zerfowski

(Macon, IL) August 24, 2013 For the fourth time, the Shriners made an appearance at Macon Speedway putting smiles on the faces of kids and bigger smiles on the faces of twelve kids with bicycle giveaways. On the racetrack, however, it was Matt Taylor with the biggest smile by the night's end.

The 2012 Late Model champion made a pass for the lead on the 17th lap to take control of the race and sealed the deal working the bottom groove for the final 33 laps of the 4th Annual Shrine 50. The race began with Brian Diveley in the lead but could not keep the top spot from the top of the race track. Race favorite Steve Sheppard, Jr. pulled in on lap 21 to inspect the front right of the car. He didn't return to the race. The race only required three cautions, the last on lap 17, and the final laps were completed without difficulty. Taylor, the third different winner of this four-year race, finished ahead of Dively, Greg Kimmons, Ryan Little and Jason Riggs.

Guy Taylor took advantage of a caution with three laps left to grab the lead from Shelbyville's Clark Robertson and win the Billingsley Towing Modified feature. Robertson was running perfectly on the bottom but the opportunity came for Taylor and he took advantage. Randy Huffman, who also led laps, finished third with Tommy Sheppard, Jr. in fourth and Rodney Standerfer in fifth.

Dave Crawley Jr. got another Sportman feature, besting Jeremy Nichols and Nick Macklin. Crawley's fast 5s was quicker than Macklin's tonight and Nichols just couldn't get the groove to get momentum for a position change.

Terry Reed started from the pole and won the Street Stock feature. He had challenges from Mike Pickering and Bobby Beiler but couldn't monster the momentum from the bottom side.

Thad Gee won again in the Stock Hornets, going wire-to-wire for the win, and Adam Webb took top honors in the Outlaw Hornets.

The monster truck RAMINATOR will be here next weekend with the 9th Annual Street Stock Championship race.
