Season Finale @ Macon by Brett Zerfowski

(Macon, IL) At the beginning of the season, many drivers hoped for a chance to be a champion. At the end of the season, only one driver per division would receive that honor. Last week, the Late Models and the Sportsman crowned champions. This week, the Billingsley Towing Modifieds, Street Stocks and Pro and Amateur Hornets would determine who would be the champions.
 Guy Taylor had a terrific May and June, winning six of eight feature races and taking a strong hold on the point standings. The lead did not get a chance to shrink as he raced and finished regularly. He would be crowned champion thanks to a terrific racetrack with multiple grooves.Taylor used the top and middle grooves to take the win away from Kelly Kovski, who led all the way until the very end. Kovski continued to ride the bottom but Taylor was too quick up top to get the checkered flag.

The final lap completed with Taylor winning, Kovski in second, Jeremy Nichols was third, Joe Strawkas finished fourth ahead of the 2011 Billingsley Towing Modified champion Danny Smith. Smith would finish second in the points with Jeff Graham in third.

Larry Russell, Jr. already had the championship wrapped up coming into the night’s show and was just at Macon Speedway to race one more night and take it easy on the equipment. Russell, the 2010 champion, reclaimed the top spot and the title, with a fifth place showing.

The race went to Argenta’s Kevin Crowder. A fun heat race with Crowder getting the best of Luke Force set up a pole-position start for Crowder and his dominance for the top spot in the 15-lap feature. Terry Reed, who finished second in the points standings in 2012, finished second in the feature. Mike Pundt, Jr. was third with Nick Macklin in fourth place.

The Hornets divisions also crowned champions as Jeremy Reed saw his dream come true with a Pro Hornet Championship. After finishing second to Adam Webb in 2011, he set out to win a title and he did, thanks to 13 features. Reed had an awful 20-lap feature with a flat right front tire as he was battling for the lead with Donnie Justice. Justice stuck to the bottom of the track and won his first feature of the year. Adam Webb took second place with Billy Justice, the runner-up in the points standings, was third.

Michael Gossett led the lead slip away in the heat to finish behind Kyle Maxwell but he learned his lesson come feature time and made the right adjustments to win the race. Zach Perryman finished fourth and clinched himself the Amateur Hornet Championship. He had the division clinched two weeks ago.

The Macon Speedway crowd was also thrilled by the POWRi Midgets & Micro Sprints. Nine of the 14 preliminary heat and B-Main races were won by the pole-sitter and 13 of the 14 were won by the front row. Only Kyle Schutt in the POWRi Micro Sprints started behind the leaders to win a race.

And then the features arrived. In the POWRi Midget 30-lap feature, the eighth-place starter Tyler Thomas, 17-year-old from Oklahoma, got the top spot, his third feature of the season, with a pass on pole-sitter Brett Anderson, who finished second. Danny Stratton finished third after starting 15th.

Trent Beckinger once again took top honors at Macon Speedway with the POWRi Micro Sprint Series and started in the third-place position (second row inside). He had to race smoothly to close the race out as Aaron Andruskevitch made the late charge but finished second.

The season came to a close shortly after 11pm as fans and drivers made the final exit of Macon Speedway for the 2012 racing season. Plans are underway for the start of 2013 in a mere seven months. Macon Speedway wishes to thank all the staff, officials, sponsors, drivers and fans for a terrific racing season.
